Obituary for James "Tex" Johnson, Jr.

June 26, 1925 - September 6, 2018

James "Tex" Johnson, Jr., 93, of Owens Cross Roads, passed away Thursday.

In 1957 Tex was the All-Around Rodeo Champion. He was raised in Texas and moved to Athens in 1961. He started James Tex Johnson Concrete Finishing Co. He also owned Tri Tex Concrete and was a partner in McCurdy Concrete Co. Tex retired in July of 1985. He met Judy and they were married in 1989. He moved to New Hope in 1988. He was avid hunter and enjoyed hunting trips all over the United States and in 19 foreign countries. He helped to re-establish the New Hope Saddle Club in 1988. He was a horse trader and trainer all of his life. In 1968 he organized the Nathan Bedford Forrest march from Athens to Florence. He drove his first racecar at the age of 55 and was a track champion at Huntsville Speedway. In 1998 Tex was inducted into both the TUSCA and Alabama Open Horseman Association Hall of Fame. He was the owner of J bar J Ranch. Above all Tex will be remembered as a humanitarian.

He was preceded in death by father, James Johnson, Sr., mother, Ruby Johnson and great grandson, Justin Ross Frazier.

Surviving are wife, Judy White Johnson, children, Billy Wayne Johnson, James Harold Johnson, Patricia Ulloa, and Michael Ray Johnson, ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, sisters, Betty Travis and Faye Dollar, and several nieces & nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ricky Tallent, Steve Vinson, David Smith, Ed Murphy, Joe D. Smith,Terry Mann, and many Honorary Pallbearers.

Visitation will be Sunday 5-8pm and Monday 5-8pm at New Hope Funeral Home. Services will be held at Cove Baptist Church, Tuesday at 11am with Rev. Doug Browner officiating.

Interment will be in the Moon Cemetery.
