Obituary for Wendell Howard Salmons

September 17, 1940 - January 25, 2018

Wendell H. Salmons, 77, of Owens Cross Roads, AL and formerly of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2018.

Wendell was born in Kenova, West Virginia to Gorman and Ethel Salmons but spent most of his youth in Albany, Kentucky and Inez, Kentucky. After graduating from Millersburg Military Institute, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Korea where he was stationed on the DMZ. He has always been very proud of having served his country. While studying at Morehead State University, he met and married his wife, Lois. After graduating in 1966, he began teaching in Fayette County, Kentucky. In 1970 he took a position with the Veterans Administration in Lexington where he worked for 16 years. Wendell went back to teaching at Bryan Station Junior High and then Lexington Magnet School and retired from the Fayette County School System in 2000. In 2005, Wendell and Lois moved from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky to Owens Cross Roads, Alabama.

Wendell's hobbies included reading, fishing, golfing and amateur radio (AE4PD).

Besides his parents, Wendell is preceded in death by his sister, Janice Taylor.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois, his daughter, Dr. Wendy (Harry) Pennington of Huntsville, AL, his son, Dr. Bryan (Sarah) Salmons of Jefferson City, MO and five grandchildren, Matthew Pennington, Ben Salmons, Grace Salmons, Jakob Salmons and Eva Salmons.

A Memorial Service will be held at The First Baptist Church of New Hope at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 3, 2018.
