Obituary for Billy Joe Cooper

December 8, 1934 - September 2, 2018

Billy Joe Cooper, born on December 08, 1934 passed away at Shepherd’s Cove Hospice on September 02, 2018 at the age of 83. He was the youngest son of Eldridge and Sarah Jones Cooper. He grew up on Gunter Mountain, where he met his wife, Martha Atchley Cooper and they were married on December 17,1955. They were married almost 63 years and have two sons.

Billy Joe played basketball on one of the first teams to play in the State Tournament in 1954, which was the year he graduated from KDS DAR High School. He also played baseball, softball, and independent softball. He worked at Cathedral Caverns after graduating in 1954 and later that year he worked as a County Engineer. After that, he worked as a Mechanical Engineer Draftsman at Redstone Arsenal where he retired 31 years later. In 1961, he started the first t-ball team at DAR and enjoyed coaching his sons’ summer baseball teams. Billy Joe also enjoyed raising cattle, swine, and gardening.

Billy Joe was one of the first elders at the Grant Church of Christ as well as the Hebron Church of Christ, where he continued to serve until his failing health no longer allowed him to serve in 2016. Billy Joe loved directing singing at gospel meetings as well as other congregations. He led his last song in March, 2018. Most of all, Billy Joe loved the Lord, his family, and spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His greatest joy was being a Christian. He taught several in- home bible studies and loved the one Church that Christ built.

Billy Joe is survived by his wife Martha Atchley Cooper, son Michael (Donna) Cooper, son Phillip (Sandy) Cooper, three grandchildren Blake (Sara) Cooper, Lindsay (Charlie) Catt, Tanya Cooper and five step grandchildren Jimmy (Jessica) Hartman, Heather Hartman, Samantha (Howard) Leitman, Kristen Caperton, and Lauren Caperton, four great-grandchildren Kaydence Cooper, Cooper Catt, Elijah Cooper, baby Catt on the way (February) and five step great-grandchildren Logan Hartman, Cooper Hartman, Riley Hartman, Jarrett Hartman, Ezmae Caperton, one brother James Cooper, and several nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his father Eldridge Cooper, mother Sarah Jones Cooper, sisters Lillie and Beaulah DeArmond, Evelyn Cooper, brothers Luther, Milfred, Elmer, Willard Cooper and all of his sister and brother in laws.

Pallbearers will be Blake Cooper, Charlie Catt, Bart Chandler, Butch Atchley, Dwayne Cooper and David Cooper, Honorary Pallbearers, Joe Henson, Billy Bearden, Gerald Morrison, James Dudley, Ron Givens and Kenneth Randles.

Visitation will be Monday 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at New Hope Funeral Home. Services will be held at New Hope Funeral Home Chapel, Tuesday at 2:00 pm with Bro. Mark Hastings and Bro. Bobby Starnes officiating.

Interment will be in the Free Home Cemetery.
